Julia Felton, a sixth-grader at Turrill Elementary, has been selected to represent Michigan at the 2007 Miss America Preteen Pageant at Disney World in Orlando, Fla., during Thanksgiving week.
Julia, 11, is the daughter of John and Renee Felton of Lapeer.

The Lapeer County Community Foundation has announced its 2007 Ross P. Broesamle Educational Fund Scholarship recipients. The Lapeer County Community Foundation is a permanent endowment established to benefit the residents of Lapeer County forever. With assets now at $8 million, The Lapeer County Community Foundation has awarded more than $600,000 in grants since its inception in 1996, including more than $325,000 in scholarships from this fund alone.
The fund was started by Ross P. Broesamle to honor his father, who was once superintendent of the Almont-Dryden School District, and offers scholarships to students from both Almont and Dryden. Scholarships are awarded annually, and students may reapply. The 2007 Ross P. Broesamle Educational Fund Scholarships totaling $48,350 have been awarded to the following:
2007 high school graduating seniors from Dryden High School:
Mallory Furgerson to Grand Valley State University, daughter of Philip and Sherrill Furgerson, $2,500; Bryan Jackman to UM-Flint, son of Raymond and Kim Jackman, $1,000; Jason Jones to Ferris State University, son of Robert and Chris Jones, $1,000; Kirk Marchwinski to Western Michigan University, son of Robert and Renee Marchwinski, $1,500; Hailee Sherrill to Macomb Community College, daughter of Tom and Jackie Sherrill, $500.

The Lapeer County Medical Fund, established in 1997, was created in memory of Herbert M. Best, M.D. to further the advancement of medical science and education. The 2007 Medical Fund Scholarships have been awarded to:
Christina Coulter, Lapeer, $2,500 to attend UM-Flint and Elizabeth Wigton, Dryden, $2,500 to attend Western Michigan University.
The Hazel Simms Nursing Scholarship Fund was started in 1997 as a fund of the Lapeer County Community Foundation to support nursing scholarships for residents of Lapeer County. Applicants for this scholarship must be entering a nursing school within the state of Michigan. The 2007 Hazel Simms Nursing Fund Scholarships have been awarded to: Michele Jaskot, Dryden, for $1,500 to attend UM-Flint; Jimmy Mauk, Metamora, for $852.07 to attend Mott Community College; Stephanie Whitkopf, Metamora, for $1,500 to attend UM-Flint.
The Clarke Adams Memorial Fund was established in 2001 for a variety of charitable purposes. For the first time in 2006, the fund awarded five $1,000 scholarships to Lapeer Community Schools graduating seniors. The 2007 Clarke Adams Memorial Fund Scholarships have been awarded to: Catherine Davlin, Lapeer East High School, to UM-Ann Arbor; Troy Heverly, Lapeer West High School, to Michigan State University; Erika Pearson, Lapeer East High School, to Michigan State University; Ryan Weber, Lapeer West High School, to Central Michigan University; Haley Weingartz, Lapeer East High School, to Saginaw Valley State University.
Other scholarships awarded through the Foundation include:
Maynard de Grow Memorial Scholarship from the North Branch Area School Fund: Natalie Matuszczak, $500, North Branch High School to UM-Ann Arbor
Christopher Jon Dirks Memorial Scholarship: $500 to Paige Onweller, Lapeer East High School, to Ferris State University.
