Recreation leader
honored for ideals
Carol Billig of North Branch received the Chester Graham Award recently at the 2008 Great Lakes Recreation Leaders Lab in Lexington, Mich. The award honors an individual who has exemplified, in personal life and at work, recreation ideals set forth by Chester A. Graham, a program founder.
The annual lab program, held at Camp Cavell, gives members a chance to study and practice living recreation and share ideas. Constructive recreation with a unique approach is promoted.
Croswell Fair Open
Goat Show winners
On June 8, several members of the Country Kids 4-H club participated in the Croswell Fair Open Goat Show. Natalie Rood, of Lapeer, had Grand Champion Angora wather; and Laura Rood, also of Lapeer, had the Grand Champion Angora doe. Rood also placed first in junior showmanship.
College students
win scholarships
Class of 2008 Lapeer West High School graduate Jordan Weir and Lapeer East graduate Adrienne Peabody have been awarded $5,000 Free Enterprise Scholarships at Northwest University for 2008-09. The scholarship reflects academic excellence in high school. It is renewable each year if criteria are met.
Peabody is the daughter of Jan Peabody of Lapeer. Weir’s parents are Brenda and Robert Weir of Lapeer.
Record number of
qualifying students
Thirty-two students from the Lapeer County Education and Technology Center recently qualified to compete nationally through organizations offered at the center. This is the largest number of student qualifiers in recent years, Principal Harvey Vermeesch said.
Sales and marketing students who competed at the national DECA conference April 26-29 in Atlanta, Ga. include Zac Sanborn, Lapeer East; Megan Fenslau, North Branch; Melissa Gentry, Lapeer West; Erica Turner, Imlay City; Ashley Kennedy and Julie Kennedy, Almont.
Amber Stone of Imlay City qualified to compete in the HOSA national conference June 18-21 in Dallas.
Students eligible to compete in the SkillsUSA national conference June 23-28 in Kansas City include Kierstyn Schulte, North Branch; Karl Ihrke, Dryden; Felicia Haller, Lapeer West; Chris Thomas, Lapeer West; Mike Lutes, North Branch; Colton Kitts, Lapeer West; Acasia Jeffery, North Branch; Dan Pizzuti, Imlay City; Brittney Bertrand, Lapeer East; and Lauren Morris, Lapeer West.
Others in line for the SkillsUSA competition are Cody Middleton, Almont; Christopher Lansky, Almont; Charles Davis, Lapeer West; Bryan Beebe, Lapeer West; and Daniel Vermander, Dryden.
Agriscience horticulture students qualified to compete at the FFA national conference Oct. 22-25 in Indianapolis are Samantha Wise, Darcy Walker, Cassandra Hoult and Jenna Pawlaczyk, Imlay City; and Josh O’Connell, North Branch.
Poultry students include Zac Proctor, North Branch; Brittani Johnson, Imlay City; Samantha Goss, North Branch; Erin Grandchamp, North Branch; and Chad Geoit, Lapeer East.
