Lapeer County Democratic Party names $1,000 Scholarship Winner
LAPEER — Lapeer County Democratic Party members announced this week that Lapeer East senior Rachel Skylis is the 2008 winner of the Al and Shelby Cicchini Memorial Scholarship for $1,000.
Rachel will attend Michigan State University’s James Madison College this fall to major in political science. Rachel is a high honor student at Lapeer East, and active in the Student Council, Key Club, National Honor Society, Students for School Improvement, and she chaired this year’s Homecoming Assembly Committee.
She also volunteered at the Lapeer DeAngeli Library, Suncrest, and for the Goodfellows Can Drive. Rachel was selected to be Lapeer East’s delegate to the Michigan Girls State in the summer of 2007.
Party Chairperson Bill Marquardt said the Lapeer County Democratic Party received 24 applications from public school seniors who planned to continue their education beyond high school in an apprenticeship, technical training, community college or university.
“The high number of applications made the decision difficult,” Marquardt said. “We were impressed by all of the applicants’ school and community involvement, and the commitment of these seniors to get involved with local, state, and national issues.”
“Al and Shelby Cicchini were tragically killed three summers ago in an auto accident while en route to our annual golf outing,” Marquardt noted. “They were dedicated to community service and the importance of further education. Their dedication will continue though this year’s memorial scholarship winner Rachel Skylis.”
Funds for the scholarship are raised through the Al and Shelby Memorial Golf Outing scheduled for July 2008 at Rolling Hills Golf Course.
