Almont students win at math competition
ALMONT
— Student math teams from Almont High School brought home some significant awards at the recent mathematics competition at Mott Community College in Flint.
The school’s A Team, which included seniors David Stroup, Albert Sowers, Emalee Maus and junior Marie Burkland, placed first out of 30 teams.
The combined efforts of the A Team and the B Team — including seniors Lyndsay Klebba, Ellen Glinski, Eathan Coucke and Tara Ouillette — placed third out of 15 in high school combined team competition.
Sponsor and math teacher David Voyt noted that during the non-calculator portion of the competition, the Almont teams received recognition for correctly answering the most number of math problems without using a calculator.

Weiber wins
singing competition
LAPEER —
Zachary Weiber, a Lapeer resident, recently won the regional competition for Classical Singers at the University of Michigan.
Weiber will go on to compete in the national competition on May 26.
Weiber travels to Mexico to perform the lead in the opera Statue of Maderno for the Archdiocese of Detroit in June.

Arson Awareness
winners in Imlay City
IMLAY CITY
— Brianna Jackman of Imlay City High School won first place in the Michigan Arson Awareness poster contests and received a $250 first prize. Denise Soulliere took second place and a $150 prize.
The students beat out 40 entrants for the competition. Soulliere also won the Junior Duck stamp contest in Michigan and will go on to compete in the federal competition.

Smith wins Breaking Traditions award
LAPEER
— Stephanie Smith, a Lapeer County Education and Technology Center student, was honored during the 2008 Breaking Traditions Awards presentation on May 15.
Smith was one of 18 students honored with a merit award for students preparing for careers nontraditional for their gender.
Smith plans to pursue a career in law enforcement after her graduation from Lapeer East High School. Her instructor, Donald Hammond, nominated her for the award for her hard work and dedication. — J.F.

Bus drivers
are winners
LAPEER
— Lapeer Community Schools bus drivers took home the team trophy for the fourth year in a row. Forty drivers from 11 school districts participated in the event. Lapeer’s top team of drivers included Val Miklovich, Christine Tucker and Brenda Wells, scoring 1,859 out of a possible 2,250. Another Lapeer team, Cindy Mullin, Sheila Rickman and Virginia Bramble, took third place. Other Lapeer participants at the event were: Debbie Atwell, Luann Best, Cheryl Drake, Angie Maladecki, Kathy Thornsberry and Cecil Ward.
In individual performances, two Lapeer drivers qualified for the state finals. Christine Tucker took first place with 658 of a possible 750 points. Brenda Wells finished third with 644 points. — J.F.
