Troops get
warm sendoff

U.S. Army 2nd Lt. John Mark Stahl, son of John and Ruth Stahl of Arcadia Township, flew to Fort Hood, Texas, Tuesday to be shipped out with his Michigan unit to active duty in the Middle East.
Stahl will have 21 men under his command in a light cavalry brigade. John Mark Stahl is a graduate of Michigan State University and has been an active citizen in Lapeer from his early teens as a Red Cross volunteer, CPR instructor at the Lapeer Rec. Center, a volunteer at Lapeer Regional Medical Center and has also achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. He has also been active in Lapeer politics, playing an important role in the election of his father, State Rep. John Stahl (R-Arcadia Twp.) in the 2002 and 2004 elections.
A delegation of Patriot Guard riders and Lapeer’s Operation Care provided a flag honor guard at Bishop International Airport.
The family asks that donations to troops be made to Operation Care of Michigan. Visit at www.ocpmi for details. Operation Care Package Director J.J. Fulgenzi of Lapeer County sends care packages to the troops.

Midget wrestlers
Keagan Silverthorn, grandson of Hilda Novak of Lapeer, placed second at the AAU National Wrestling Championship at Cobo Center March 21-22.
He was in the Midget Division, weight class: 65 pounds. Matthew Taub was first-place winner and Ella Wilson came in third.

Paper published
Sara A. Kunz, a senior in pre-med studies at Aquinas University, co-authored a paper to be published in a leading medical periodical.
She has been accepted into medical schools at Michigan State University and Wayne State University, among others.
Ms. Kunz was the 2004 co-valedictorian at Almont High School.
