— Cub Scout Pack 126 hosted its annual Pinewood Derby races on Saturday, Feb. 2, at St. Paul School.
Winners in each division included: Overall — Stephen Placeway, Kyle Meldrum, Jonothan Kautz; Webelos — Kyle Meldrum, Jonothan Kautz, Tommie Peasley; Bears — Kyle Beatley, Noah Jones, Jacob Brozek; Wolf — Stephen Placeway, Ryan Beatley, Isaac Treat; Tiger — Gavin English, Lorance Sheldon, Robbie Barron.

has its rewards
LAPEER COUNTY
— The K-12 Service Learning Center has announced the winners of the 2008 Salute to Service awards. These awards recognize excellence in community service projects, volunteers and project coordinators.
The Hero category is presented to teachers or leaders who have created outstanding community service projects that positively impact the community as a whole, and the young people who participate. This year’s winners are Vikki Bishop of Almont Middle School; Patrick Lothrop of Lynch Elementary; Peter McCreedy of Chatfield School; the Flint River Watershed Coalition and Wendy Tannis, the North Branch 4-H Club Read Summer Fun Leader.
The Shining Star category celebrates community service projects that are created and run by young adults. This year’s winners are the Girl Scouts, Fairwind Council, for its Lapeer North Winds Service Unit Holiday Project; Lapeer East High School’s National Junior Honor Society’s Kid’s Street Club; Lynch and Maple Grove Elementary and Suncrest Auxiliary for its visits to the Lapeer County Medical Care Facility; and North Branch High School’s Service With Impact From Teens (S.W.I.F.T.) and its local service projects.
The Champion category recognizes organizations, businesses and schools that have shown long-term commitment to community service and service- learning activities that involve young adults. The winners this year are Dynamic Dance of North Branch and Extreme Cheer and Dance of Imlay City. — Jessica Fish
